What Actually Makes UPeSIM Different

UPeSIM is a French MVNO based in Paris, running since 2018, rather than a reseller sitting on top of someone else's eSIM platform the way a lot of newer travel-eSIM apps are. It covers 200+ countries and territories through local carrier partnerships (its own site no longer lists the smaller country count some older reviews of it quote, so if you've seen "130+" elsewhere, that figure is out of date).

The plans are strictly prepaid with no subscription commitment: buy a fixed block of days, use it, and it expires without auto-renewing or charging you again. That cuts both ways. There's no surprise recurring charge the way a provider like Ubigi can carry if you forget to cancel, but it also means UPeSIM won't quietly extend your plan if you're still traveling when it runs out; you have to notice and top up yourself.

Your Plan Doesn't Start Counting Down Until You Land

UPeSIM's plans only begin once your phone actually connects to the destination network, not when you install the eSIM or scan the QR code. That means you can set the eSIM up before you fly, at home, with no rush at the airport, and it sits inactive until you land and it registers on a local tower. The catch is the flip side of that same convenience: UPeSIM's own FAQ notes an eSIM profile that's installed but never activated goes stale after 60 days and shows as expired in the app, so don't install one for a trip that's still months away and expect it to still be usable.

It's data-only. Calls and texts route through your home carrier at whatever roaming rate that carrier charges, not through UPeSIM, so WhatsApp or Telegram over the data connection is the practical way to stay reachable without a second bill.
